Specialist Decorator

Job Summary: We are seeking a talented and detail-oriented Specialist Decorator to join MBMC STUDIOS. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in artistic finishes and a keen eye for aesthetics, working closely with designers to bring creative visions to life through custom murals, faux finishes, stencilling, gilding, and other decorative painting techniques.

Key Responsibilities

  • Command a high level of skill in different decorative specialisms.
    • Candidates must be able to produce two or more of the following finishes: Faux finishes such as Marbleizing, Wood grain, lacquering, glaze finishes, gilding, French polishing, distemper finishes or polished plaster.
    • Demonstrate expert capability in at least one of the following areas: Basic preparatory decoration (including the hanging of wallpaper), Wall-covering printing or manufacture, Polished and Burnished Plaster Finishes, Painted Faux Finishes, Timber finishes/French polishing, Mirror and Glass finishes/ Gilding.
    • Handle a range of different media from traditional oil colours mixed into semi-opaque scumble-glazes to casein-bound pigments mixed into distemper paint.
    • Use your knowledge of paint systems, their properties and uses to make decisions. Paint systems such as gouache, watercolour, tempera, encaustic, distemper colour washing, limewash, acrylic, etc. Qualificiations
  • Studio and on-site responsibilities.
    • Maintaining a clean and tidy studio/site at all times.
    • On-site, you will be required to offer assistance in applying decorative effects to a variety of surfaces.
    • You will need to apply preparatory decoration to a variety of substrates and prepare grounds for overworking with more complex decorative systems, etc.
  • Assist in Furniture Decoration
    • Undertaking Furniture preparation and minor furniture repairs, painting furniture in a wide variety of decorative styles.
    • Other practices in decorating furniture that will be utilised are Gilding (oil, mordant and water), Lacquer work, French polishing and Gesso work.
  • Outlook and Co-operation
    • You are expected to display a high standard of teamwork, to be polite, tidy and conscientious at all times.
    • You should co-operate in undertaking the work of absent colleagues or in assisting in other departments where the workload is particularly high, and accordingly, you may be required to undertake other duties.

Qualifications

  • High level of proficiency in the decorative techniques stated above
  • Computer literacy and experience with Microsoft Outlook, Word and Excel are required
  • A working knowledge of any of the following software is desirable: Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, AUTOCAD or Vectorworks.
  • A valid Driving Licence is PREFERRED.
  • Other items that are beneficial to an application are Health and safety CITB certification, ladders and scaffold safety certification and First aid Qualifications.

Physical Requirements 

  • The majority of our work will be based in London, but also on-site around Britain and International projects as directed.
